This morning at 5 A.M., all of Hollywood endured a lack of sleep to rise and witness the nominations for the grandest of prizes in all of the movie industry, The Academy Award. The Academy Award, or Oscar, is the end result of all of the hard work that the men and women of the film industry do on a continual basics all for the purpose of entertaining us, the fans. However, with all of the accolades that come with the announcement of the Academy Awards, there are always winners and loser. Here are the winners and losers from this year’s Oscar Nominations.
Black Panther: Winner
Wakanda Forever. Black Panther had a year for the ages. Black Panther opened to over $200 Million dollars while grossing over $700 Million at the domestic box office and over $1.3 Billion worldwide. Black Panther also was the number one film for 2018 while becoming a cultural phenomenon for black culture while also raising the level for what comic book films could become. Black Panther can now add another accolade to it’s already padded resume with the first ever Best Picture Nomination for a comic book movie. Black Panther also received another Six Oscar Nominations for Best Sound Editing; Best Sound Mixing; Best Original Score; Best Costume Design; Best Production Design and the first Academy Award Nomination for rapper Kendrick Lamar for Best Original Song for All the Stars. One disappointment would be the omission of a possible Oscar Nomination for Michael B. Jordan for the role of Eric “Killmonger” Stevens, the cousin of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) who comes back to challenge him for the title of King of Wakanda. Many would argue that Jordan’s role has a lot of similarities to Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008).
